Musashibō Benkei, a monk from Mount Hiei, has decided to pay an evening visit to a shrine in Kyoto.

Benkei's retainer advises him not to use the bridge at Gojō as a monstrous manslayer has appeared there.

At first, Benkei agrees. But, confident in his strength, he goes out to destroy the manslayer.

Evening at Gojō bridge. Ushiwaka (Minamoto no Yoshitsune) appears.

Ushiwaka stands on the bridge. The warrior monk Benke approaches.

桜間金太郎

Dressed as a woman, Ushiwaka confronts Benke and the battle begins.

Ushiwaka deftly eludes the long sword and shows mercy to Benke.

後藤得三

Benke surrenders and pledges to serve Ushiwaka.
