Eguchi : PhotoStory

An itinerant monk recites a poem by Monk Saigyō condemning Madam Eguchi for refusing him lodging. A woman takes him to task.

The woman says that the refusal had shown consideration for the monk. She reveals that she is the ghost of Madam Eguchi and vanishes.

Madam Eguchi appears before the monk, who is performing a memorial service. She shows a scene with her attendants on a pleasure boat, enjoying themselves on a magnificent river.

After lamenting the courtesan, Madam Eguchi explains karmic reward and the transience of all things.

She performs a relaxed and elegant dance.

The dance is not only graceful but also shows deep truth.

Eventually, the courtesan is transformed into the bodhisattva Fugen and disappears into the western sky.
